You know you are not living the life you want. You feel it everyday as you drag yourself to the job you hate. Sometimes it is easy to think that this is the life that was intended, that nothing can be done about it, or that life sucks and then you die. Well that is all bull!

We all have a choice on what path our life can take, we just have to step outside of the mire of apathy and move our bodies in the right direction. I am doing this process right now. I work for a company forty hours a week and the value I take away from it equals Nada. I spent a great deal of time in life (The first 32 years really) doing the shoulds. You know the shoulds right?

You Should:

  • Get a Degree
  • Get a Job
  • Listen to your Boss
  • Work OT for No Pay
  • Be Happy You Have a Job at all

And so on. Blah Blah Blah- It is just noise!

The thing is the shoulds do not match my values or goals in life. I did them because my parents thought I should, my friends were all doing it, and it is “Normal Behavior”. The problem with normal behavior is it sucks! Yeah I said it! Normal is boring! Why should we sit in a cubicle for thirty years and hope for a retirement that might never come?

Why give all your time to people who can simply one day think your shirt does not match the drapes and give you the heave ho, or better yet, a CEO is not willing to take a pay cut from their 31 million dollars a year so you and your 2,000 friends have to find another job. These are the steps I am taking and I welcome everyone to take the same with me:

1- Make a goal and stick it everywhere. One big goal, not 20 little ones that you have to keep track of.  ONE!! Make it big though- Life Changing. Write it down and post it EVERYWHERE!  ( My Goal: Become a Full Time Writer in 2009)

2- Quit the day job (Unless you like it of course). I have worked for two big companies in my life and I realized one big thing- I just do not care to work for other people. Maybe you want to become a cook, or teach Yoga for a living. Make it your goal to quit working for others and start living your passion.

3- Stop Caring about All the Little Things. I got this from Illuminated Mind at a great time to hear (read) it. We all care too much about everything. I am not saying we should be selfish, but not caring about every little thing that happens to us is very enlightening. Not everything needs the drama, just let it go already. Want less stress? Care less!

4- Figure out what you must give up to get the life you desire. This one is big because MOST people do not do it. If you want to start a business on the side, then spend all your available time building your business. If you want to write a novel, write every second you are not working (or sleeping). Give up things like television, going out with friends, or maybe even an hour or two of sleep. Eliminate everything that takes away from your goal! Remember not everyone will appreciate this at first, but the people who know you the best will understand you need to do this right now.

5- Stop talking and reading about it and DO IT. It is very easy for us to stall. Us humans are experts at the stall. We can make it look like we are working forever by reading self help books, great blog articles, and talking passionately to anyone who listens what we plan to do . There is a time for research, but it should be quick and dirty- get to it! No one is promised tomorrow so get up, put the book down, and begin your real life now, not Monday or in the “New Year”- this minute!

Life is meant to be enjoyable. If you are not happy with the way things are going, start to make the changes today and watch your new life unfold in front of you. Remember also that this might take some time, in fact I promise it will, but remember to enjoy the process, stay conscious of all your decisions- you never know when your next decision will be the one that flips the switch from Making a Dying to Making a Living.

Remember I want to hear about your great successes! Give me a holler.

Talk to you soon!

Great list, I’ve read most of this before, probably in multiple places. Its why I started posting regularly in my blog.
